As in previous weeks, this weeks’ assignments challenged me to be more creative and use new tools. I used photoshop for the first time and actually learned something fun that I might use for future social media posts. My phone has an amazing camera so one would think that I would use it more often, right? Well after this week I definitely will be. I thought I had a lot of photos in my phone (2,113 to be exact), but with all of my photos being silly, screenshots, and mostly of the same thing, do I ~really~ have any photos? I mean I obviously do, but not ones really worth sharing. After viewing some classmates posts and seeing their awesome photos, I feel like I am missing out by not taking more photos of my surroundings. Hopefully after this week I will be more aware of photo opportunities and be able to capture more photos!
I was excited about this weeks assignments because it required me to interact with friends, talk about my favorite person (my mom), and I got to show off some of my favorite pictures of sunsets. I ended up sending my mom the post I wrote about her and she was very touched by what I had written about her. It felt good to let her know how important she is to me 🙂 I also enjoyed the daily creates this week, and had lots of fun seeing everyones creations! I had a little trouble responding to the main post for this week which was to respond to the prompt that talked about storytelling. I wrote and re-wrote the post a few times and I just couldn’t come up with the right words to say. I eventually just settled with what I had written and moved on. I am not sure why this post in particular was so hard for me, but other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed the week!
When reading the instructions for this week, I was a little overwhelmed about everything there was to do. 3 assignments from the assignment bank, 4 days of posts from the daily create, editing my blog, and commenting on others posts seemed like a lot for one week. I started to stress and worry that I wouldn’t be able to get everything done in time before I had even started any assignments. That’s one of my biggest flaws – stressing about things that aren’t necessarily stressful.
I started the daily create posts on Saturday and to my surprise, they were easy and fun. I enjoyed seeing other peoples posts and tweets that aren’t in this class. It gave me a sense of how widespread digital studies is and how impactful it is in other peoples lives. There was one woman in particular that responded to the original post every day and often commented on mine, and other classmates posts as well, even though she is not in our class.
When it came to the assignments from the assignment bank, there were A TON to choose from. I quickly found 3 that I was interested in and went to work. Once I finished one, I went right to the next, and found that I finished them super fast. Let’s make something clear – I am definitely NOT a creative person, and I often struggle with this when it comes to writing lesson plans for my classes. I was surprised this week when I found myself enjoying the assignments and finding some semblance of creativity deep (and I mean VERY deep) within myself. I thought my posts and titles this week were punny (like funny but because they’re puns, they’re punny. Get it?) and clever, a drastic change from my boring titles from last week. I can’t promise that every week will be as good as this one as far as titles, but I am definitely trying to be more creative with every post I write!
This week was really challenging for me because I am not very tech-savvy. I could not get the website design how I wanted it for the life of me and it was driving me crazy trying to figure out how to work everything on WordPress. I know in hindsight it really wasn’t THAT hard, but for someone who sticks to Instagram and Facebook as a way of communicating with the internet, this was a huge challenge for me. I have a personal Twitter account but I never post anything, I only use it for memes and funny posts when I have nothing else to look at, so using that as a way of communicating for this class is definitely going to be interesting. SoundCloud was another site that I am not familiar with and figuring out how to record media on my laptop and upload it was also hard for me to do. I had to research what kind of programs my laptop had in order for me to figure out how to record audio only and upload it. I feel like this week was just as challenging as I thought it would be, and I was actually really nervous I wouldn’t be able to do it. But throughout the week I learned how to use the software (I think) and surprised myself when I was able to create my own website that actually functions properly. I really enjoyed designing the website and I even showed it off to a few of my friends because I think it was a huge accomplishment for me. I am definitely nervous about the rest of this semester but I am excited for the challenge! Below are links to my posts from this week:
