This week, I completed my final project for DS106. I was really intrigued by the thought of doing a quarantine mashup of some sort. I wanted to stick with our theme of “What is (Y)our story” and tell the stories of my co-workers. We are all at different stages in our lives as far as families and school, so I thought it would be interesting to hear how everyone was affected differently by the pandemic and having to stay at home. Our ages range from 18 to 27, so I thought it would make for an interesting comparison of stories. To create my story, I used my iPhone to interview my co-workers and had a set of questions that I tried to ask each person. I strayed from my script a few times based on their answers to dig deeper. For some people I was able to get a lot of information about what they did during quarantine (some was TOO much, thanks Catherine for sharing! Lol), and others I had to kind of pry the information out of them. Once I had the videos, I used iMovie to bring them together. I didn’t just want the videos to skip from one to the other, as I thought that might be too abrupt. I used a free sound from the iMovie app to blend one video to another, and I used this sound throughout the movie in order to make it more cohesive. I also added my own commercials (like we did for our radio show) to kind of separate the video interviews. The commercials were meant to be humorous and bring light to such a sensitive topic (also please do NOT call the number in the commercial, I definitely made it up for the purpose of this assignment). At the end, I added my own quarantine story, to make sure to stick with the class theme. Overall, I enjoyed hearing my co-workers account of quarantine and I hope you enjoy listening to their stories as well!
This week I started on my final project for DS106. It was hard initially for me to choose a topic to focus on, as I had a few ideas bouncing around in my head. Initially, I wanted to do college highlights. I loved the idea of sharing stories from my college experiences, but I had already done something similar for a weekly assignment. I then thought about bringing in multiple peoples’ stories, similar to our radio show we produced. I honestly really liked that idea, as it perfectly falls into our theme for this semester. Although I really like that theme, I had more of a connection with the theme I ended up choosing : Our Quarantine Stories. I got this idea from a classmate who shared an idea to do a few DIY videos for her final project, and I built on that. I tried a lot of DIY activities in quarantine last year, so I then got the idea to talk about how our life changed during quarantine. I decided to interview my co-workers and friends using video that I am going to stitch together. I have already recorded a few videos, and am working on stitching them together this weekend. I also thought it would be funny to add an advertisement in between the interviews, and make it sort of a talk show kind of thing. I want the ads to tie into the main theme, so I am thinking about some things we saw/did during quarantine that would make for good advertisements. I have also created my own poster for the interview show that I will post below as a preview!
This semester is FLYING by! It’s crazy that we only have a few weeks left of this class!
I had a lot of fun with the assignments this week. I felt like we had a lot of free choice with the assignments we chose, similar to the first week of class. I liked this a lot better, as I wasn’t confined to just one section of weekly assignments. Linked below are my posts from this week!
This week was probably the most challenging week for me. I had a lot of issues with my video editing, and I’m not completely happy with how they turned out. My phone AND my laptop decided that their storage was full (what a bunch of bull), so it was really hard for me to record and share anything. I recorded two videos (my apocalypse socks and get to know me interview) on my phone and wanted to use iMovie to add music to the back. It was then that I figured out that I was out of storage and could not make any more movies. I hate that 2 of my movies I created this week don’t have music or anything behind them, but at this point theres nothing I can do. For next week, I will have to delete lots of pictures and movies in order to record my final project that’s coming up. I was able to create my college highlights before my devices decided to act up, so that one I am actually satisfied with. My last video (tell me something I don’t know) was also created after my devices crapped out on me. I used an older video I had created and added a voice over and used my phone to play music for the background. Don’t you just LOVE when technology decides to mess with your life?? Anyways, hopefully next week will be better once I clear some storage up (or buy more, which is the most likely option)!

This week was a fun week to expand on the tools in my toolbox that I have began collecting from this class. I enjoyed doing some of the assignments from the assignment bank this week and turning them into TikToks so I can share them with my friends and family. They found them pretty funny, so I’m glad I was able to create something to share with them, but also use it as an assignment for this class as well.
I think my video essay could’ve gone a little better than it did, but at that point in the day, I had given up on trying to make it perfect. I had tried so many times to redo it and make it better but I found myself saying the same things and using “um” a lot even though I really tried to avoid it.
Overall, I think it was a good-ish week. Not my favorite, and not my best, but not bad! Below are my posts from this week:
Honestly, I’m losing track of the weeks at this point! Only a few more to go until the end of the semester!!
Below I have attached my posts from this week, and have also included the two updated versions of previous posts I made! I loved getting the chance to update my previous work and make it even better. In each post I included why I chose to update it and the changes I made. I left the original post as well for comparison. This week was supposed to be an easy week for us, but it was actually one of the harder ones for me. Coming up with ideas for the final project was definitely the hardest, but I think I got a few good ideas down! The daily creates were also a challenge for me this week because we had to connect them all. Once I had a story in my my head, it was kind of fun to connect them, but it’s definitely not something I would want to do every week lol. Overall, this week was a good one and I’m looking forward to next week!
Below I have attached my posts from this week! It was a lot of fun working with my group members to create our radio show. I think it turned out really well and it was more cohesive than I thought it would be. I enjoyed listening to my group members segments and relating their experiences to my own. It was fun to hear everyones experiences from childhood to college. In my post, Radio Show Promo, I updated the post with our group poster that we finished this week. Linked below I have also included our finished Radio Show, Walking Memory Ave., that we posted to SoundCloud! We chose the title because College Ave is a staple term at UMW, so we thought it was fitting to incorporate that in our show somehow, and thus “Memory Lane” changed to “Memory Ave.”! Hope you enjoy our show!
Below I have attached all of my work for this week! I loved getting to collaborate with my other classmates on this project and start thinking about common themes between us. By far my favorite assignment this week was the promo poster. I loved our thought process when we were coming up with design ideas for the poster and we each got to encorporate something personal which was really cool.
We each made a commercial for something nostalgic from our childhood and each one of us also made a radio bumper for our show. We will pick the best 3 from each category and include those in our final radio show. It was fun thinking back to when I was a kid playing outside with my friends and it brought back a lot of good memories that I can’t wait to share on the show!
Below I have included my posts from this week! I enjoyed getting to see the different designs my classmates have made and taken pictures of. I feel like previous weeks have been more focused on posting images you already have or recording a sound, but this week I felt like I really had the opportunity to create things. I loved making my own menu for my fake restaurant (even though I wish I could actually open it because wow my food sounded good) and I loved making the word cloud, as it gave me an opportunity to really reflect on my experiences so far in ds106. The daily creates were also really fun this week, and I enjoyed seeing my classmates’ responses, especially on the daily creates that I pass on. This was another segment of this class that I was worried about, since I am not very creative and don’t have a lot of experience with editing software. I was worried that the design assignments would be super complex and out of my league when it came to creating things. But again, my anxiety got the best of me and I was stressed for nothing because I actually really enjoyed this week more than I thought I would!!
This week was more difficult for me than previous weeks. I think audio media is the thing I am least comfortable with and the section I was dreading the most. It took a lot more time this week to complete these tasks, and if I’m being honest, dont think the quality of the posts is as great as my previous weeks. Ted Talk, When ~Corona~ Ends, and 80’s Radio Commercial are from the Assignment Bank. Below are links to my other blog posts from this week:
