This week, I completed my final project for DS106. I was really intrigued by the thought of doing a quarantine mashup of some sort. I wanted to stick with our theme of “What is (Y)our story” and tell the stories of my co-workers. We are all at different stages in our lives as far as families and school, so I thought it would be interesting to hear how everyone was affected differently by the pandemic and having to stay at home. Our ages range from 18 to 27, so I thought it would make for an interesting comparison of stories. To create my story, I used my iPhone to interview my co-workers and had a set of questions that I tried to ask each person. I strayed from my script a few times based on their answers to dig deeper. For some people I was able to get a lot of information about what they did during quarantine (some was TOO much, thanks Catherine for sharing! Lol), and others I had to kind of pry the information out of them. Once I had the videos, I used iMovie to bring them together. I didn’t just want the videos to skip from one to the other, as I thought that might be too abrupt. I used a free sound from the iMovie app to blend one video to another, and I used this sound throughout the movie in order to make it more cohesive. I also added my own commercials (like we did for our radio show) to kind of separate the video interviews. The commercials were meant to be humorous and bring light to such a sensitive topic (also please do NOT call the number in the commercial, I definitely made it up for the purpose of this assignment). At the end, I added my own quarantine story, to make sure to stick with the class theme. Overall, I enjoyed hearing my co-workers account of quarantine and I hope you enjoy listening to their stories as well!
This week I started on my final project for DS106. It was hard initially for me to choose a topic to focus on, as I had a few ideas bouncing around in my head. Initially, I wanted to do college highlights. I loved the idea of sharing stories from my college experiences, but I had already done something similar for a weekly assignment. I then thought about bringing in multiple peoples’ stories, similar to our radio show we produced. I honestly really liked that idea, as it perfectly falls into our theme for this semester. Although I really like that theme, I had more of a connection with the theme I ended up choosing : Our Quarantine Stories. I got this idea from a classmate who shared an idea to do a few DIY videos for her final project, and I built on that. I tried a lot of DIY activities in quarantine last year, so I then got the idea to talk about how our life changed during quarantine. I decided to interview my co-workers and friends using video that I am going to stitch together. I have already recorded a few videos, and am working on stitching them together this weekend. I also thought it would be funny to add an advertisement in between the interviews, and make it sort of a talk show kind of thing. I want the ads to tie into the main theme, so I am thinking about some things we saw/did during quarantine that would make for good advertisements. I have also created my own poster for the interview show that I will post below as a preview!
This semester is FLYING by! It’s crazy that we only have a few weeks left of this class!
I had a lot of fun with the assignments this week. I felt like we had a lot of free choice with the assignments we chose, similar to the first week of class. I liked this a lot better, as I wasn’t confined to just one section of weekly assignments. Linked below are my posts from this week!
This mashup was a bit harder than the other assignments this week. I love using the animoji feature on my iPhone to send funny text videos to my friends, but getting JUST the animoji by itself seemed a little bit difficult without sending it to someone. I didn’t want to send my friends a weird video of me lip syncing to a song… so the result I got is not the best, but you can still see my memoji singing lol. In my opinion, I think my memoji looks a lot like me with the long curly hair and brown eyes. And I pretty much always wear my hair in a pony tail since it basically has a mind of its own.

My three absolute favorite holidays are (in order): Halloween, Christmas, and St. Patricks day! The decorations for these three holidays are SO fun and I love the feeling I get around these times of year. I had a lot of fun creating this mashup, and I especially love the little Santa jumping off the pumpkin 🙂

For my second remix assignment, I chose to add a Dr. Seuss character to one of my previous assignments. One of my favorite assignments from this semester was my Splash of Color photo I created with Photoshop. It was really my first time using photoshop, so I was really surprised with how good it turned out. I chose to do a Wocket in our pocket, and he kind of blended in with the sunflowers which made it even more perfect. At first glance, you might not even notice him, but as you look closer, you see the little Wocket 🙂
For one of my two remix assignments, I chose to do a remix of my Tamagotchi commercial from our radio show. The assignment was to make it into a bad infomercial, and I thought, what better way to that than to make the commercial as annoying as possible? I tried to use sayings that a commercial would never use, and make it very obviously bad, as I feel that most infomercials are AWFUL at selling the product.
This weeks daily creates were fun! I think my favorite post was the poem mashup using 3 poets! I really enjoyed reading everyones poems, they were so creative!
This class actually ended up tying into another class I am taking this semester, Digital Studies 101. In that class, I worked on a final project about social media vs reality, and I thought TDC about your online persona tied in nicely to that theme. It was cool to be able to tie things together like that!
*side note: not sure why it’s saying I tweeted two TDC’s on the 12th, one was definitely done on the 11th!
When looking at a few classmates’ posts from this week a few stuck out to me. Megan’s idea was really cool and was something that I hadn’t thought of! I would love to see everyones favorite posts from this semester compiled into a video.
Another great idea was Olivia’s thoughts on a DIY project/hack video. Expanding on this, I find the 5 Minute Craft videos to be whilarious sometimes with all the crazy stuff they come up with, and I would love to try some of them! I think that would be really neat to actually put some of these hacks to the test to see if they are worth the time!
The last blog post I really enjoyed was Hena’s thoughts on our final project. I honestly loved all of her ideas, especially the Disney podcast!
I think the class came up with really great ideas and I can’t wait to get working on this project and see everyones finished results!
This week was probably the most challenging week for me. I had a lot of issues with my video editing, and I’m not completely happy with how they turned out. My phone AND my laptop decided that their storage was full (what a bunch of bull), so it was really hard for me to record and share anything. I recorded two videos (my apocalypse socks and get to know me interview) on my phone and wanted to use iMovie to add music to the back. It was then that I figured out that I was out of storage and could not make any more movies. I hate that 2 of my movies I created this week don’t have music or anything behind them, but at this point theres nothing I can do. For next week, I will have to delete lots of pictures and movies in order to record my final project that’s coming up. I was able to create my college highlights before my devices decided to act up, so that one I am actually satisfied with. My last video (tell me something I don’t know) was also created after my devices crapped out on me. I used an older video I had created and added a voice over and used my phone to play music for the background. Don’t you just LOVE when technology decides to mess with your life?? Anyways, hopefully next week will be better once I clear some storage up (or buy more, which is the most likely option)!
